Technology in my life

This week I have to write a brief essay about the use of technologies within the different subjects I've studied this year. Technology in recently years has increased enormously and almost anyone lives without a piece of technology now, because is so useful and it make everything easier for many people. Since I enter to the university for become a midwife the technology has become in something essential in my life, and no only the technology that helps me do my studies and homework but all the technology that is used for helping people to feel better by all the health professionals.

Technology has many uses depending what you want or what you need. As a student the kind of technology I used is more for doing homework, essay, reports, etc. and, of course, search information about all the subjects I’m doing in this year, like anatomy, histology, physiology, immunology and a lot of more subjects. For doing that I always used the computer, specially interne, and a special link created by the university and all the professors for keeping the contact and has access to all the classes and extra material. Also in classes the professors used a lot of technology like power point presentations that helps a lot when the topic of the class is difficult and microphones too, which help to students to pay more attention and listening well.

In my actual life technology has another use that is, I think, vital in the development of any future health profession, I’m talking about all the instrumental and material that allow us to make our job. Technology is involved in almost every medical process, from something so basic like the thermometer for knowing the body’s temperature until something more complex like a mechanic ventilator that keeps someone alive, and because of that it is very important the education and subsequent practice for learn to use all this tools correctly.

As I said, technology is very useful and have a huge importance in our student and future professional life, no matter what health professional you are or you will become, technology will always be there, sometimes for good and sometimes for bad, but we have to remember that technology is only a help and never will be something better than a person or in this case better tha a health professional. Anyway something is clear, technology always will be something in constantly development and is our responsibility to learn and know how to use it properly, specially for the good of the people, because the people is always the most important when you are a health professional

Challenges in my career

Hello everybody!!!! In this case I’m going to talk about the challenges in my discipline. Well I’m studying obstetric in the University of Chile since this year. In the future, if I pass all the exams I will be a midwife.
Like any health profession, being a midwife involves a lot of complications, I mean, we have two lives in our hands (the newborn and the mother) and it is our responsibility to take care of them. Also we have to develop a lot of skills and knowledge for doing a good job and be an excellent professional.
These things are learned in the university but it is our duty to know how to use them properly.

Also the university and being a student of a health profession have challenges.
First of all, entering the university is a challenge in itself and a very big one because all the students must give a difficult test that takes an whole year (and sometimes more) to prepare it. After entering university you have to try to stay in it because it is so easy to fail and go out of the university. All the tests and exams are terrible and all the assignments, homework, reports, etc. are extremely stressful and exhausting. Passing the exam is another challenge, and if you fail it you have to do the entire subject again and that is a terrible thing because you have to keep studying more years. For other students, paying the university is a complicated challenge because nothing is free and the career is expensive (more than two million Chilean pesos each year and it increases every year) some students have to work for paying their studies, which is really hard.

After finishing the studies, finding a good job is another challenge. Earning money is essential to begin an own life and pay the bill of the university too!!
After all I think that the challenges are doing for be better and in our case to make a professional of excellence. All the challenges are necessary for develop ourselves and to try hard when we really want something.

Improving your faculty

Hello again!!! This day I have to talk about my faculty and how I can improve it.

Well I am in the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Chile, this is one of the oldest constructions of all the university and because of that the infrastructure needs some renovation like the bathrooms, some auditoriums or classrooms, the hospital next to the faculty needs an entire renovation too.

Apart from the structure there are other problems, apparently the money isn’t enough to afford all the equipment and the materials that are necessary for the students, for example when we go to the laboratory we have to share the equipment, that’s not bad but the education would be better if everyone had their own space and equipment. Another example can be the lack of good computers. In the library the computers are a complete disaster!!! They are so bad that nobody can use them. It is impossible to do the homework and this is a terrible situation because some students don’t have internet or computers in their home. Also the communication between the students and the professor is through internet, all the homework, classes and exams are informed through internet.

Unfortunately the solutions would be more money but that is a remote possibility, maybe doing things like parties, games or something like that to raise money could be an option.

Another option could be talk with the people in charge and say them that it is necessary solve the problem for improve the quality of the education because this is our only method for be a better professional in the future.

Hello again!! This week I have to talk about hobbies, there are many of them but each one has a prefer hobby. Personally I have many hobbies, one of them is the reading, I can spent hours and hours with a book, I love the histories about magic, love and mystery and I don’t like the books about murders or about terror, they scare me. My favorites authors are J.K. Rowling, Dan Brown, Paulo Coelho and more recently Stephanie Meyer, these are very famous because of their novels that generally are bestsellers, all the people buy them!!. Another hobby I like is watch movies, like the books I like the movies about love, magic and the comedies and I hate the movies about terror, wars or about politics I watch movies for fun not to stress me more !!.
Well my preferred hobbies are drawing and painting, I really love them and honestly I think that I do them very well. I can draw anything, but generally I draw places, forest, the ocean and things like that, also I draw people. About my painting it is very colorful, I don’t like painting with only black and white I am happier if I can use all the colors without limits and usually I mix the colors. I painted since I was a child but I have been developing and improve it since I was ten years. I think that are many people that have a great skill, but everyone can draw no matter how they do it, the important is to try and practice and give all your passion. Now, since I started the second semester in the university, I am in a drawing class and I hope I can be better and improve myself for finally do a beautiful work of art, because this is something that I really love. Well I see the next week!!

Hello again!!! This week I’m going to talk about summer vacations, I love it!! And I only think about the end of university and the beginning of the vacations. But for that I have to wait about two months more...
Well all my life I went to the beach specifically to “Tabo”, this beach is in the fifth region of Chile, is a popular, beautiful and a relatively cheap beach. In those years my family always rented a house for a few days, But some years later all my family together bought a beach house in “Isla Negra” and since then we always go to there for much more time, about one month generally. Isla Negra is known because there is where a famous poet “Pablo Neruda” have his house, is a beautiful house immediately in front the sea, every year we go to his home. In the next summer we are going to go to “Isla Negra” again, like every summer.
Generally when we are in the beach we go all the day to the beach, there my brother and I swim in the ocean, play tennis, climb big rocks next to the sea and eat a lot of ice cream, after that we relax and see the beautiful sunset and walk back to our home. In the night we dress up and go to others cities next to “Isla Negra”, like “Algarrobo”, “El Quisco” and sometimes we enjoy a beautiful dinner next to the sea, or simply walk and walk seen the shops and all the handicrafts. Sometimes we only visit to other family in “Tabo” and have a nice night talking about ourselves.
I travel to the beach always with my mother, father, little brother, my two cousins, my two grandparents and my two dogs, a lot of people!!! But our house is big enough for all them. I really enjoy my vacations, but in the future I want to go to others countries like Australia, France, England, Italy, well I really want to go to the entire world!! I know that is a dream but how knows? maybe sometime in the future I can go!!!

Pregnancy-related diabetes : reducing the risk of complications

Hello again!!! Well in this time I will do a summary about a new item connected with my future career : Midwife.

I chose a new about gestacional diabetes. This disease development during the pregnancy and its symptoms are a high level of sugar in the pregnant woman. The baby`s sugar can be high too and because of that he could have problems during delivery like a caesarean section or a shoulder injury and also he can born with more weight. This affect to the mother too, she can development high blood preasure and in other cases a condition called pre-eclampsia that can produce death.

For reducing risk , pregnant women are checked for gestacional diabetes, more if they have some risk factors like overweight, someone in their family with diabetes or their babys are overweigt, etc. The woman who has this condition is treated advising her to change her diet an doing some exercising. If this doesn´t work the woman is treated using insulin. The problem is that this treatment is only for women that have a mild gestacional diabetes and is not helpful for women who have high level of sugar. What is the solution? : Prevent. Some studies revealed that women with mild gestacional diabetes have more chances to have a good pregnancy and delivery with less complications, also they can be treated without medicins (insulin). So for the pregnant woman is recommended to check for gestacional diabetes with their midwife and follow their treatment and advices , prevent is so easy and this will be the best for her and her little baby.

A sporting life

Hi!!! This week I have to talk about the importance of sports, well pesonally I don´t do sports right now because I don´t have the time and I prefer doing other things like painting or reading. I know perfectly that the sedentary life it´s very bad and doing sports you will have a more healthy and long life. Before I enter to university I usually like swimming and basketball, I love it I could stay in the water hours and hours without boring, it help me to relax and have a good time, now I haven´t organized my time for do it.

Actually the sports has been forgotten because now the people aren´t interested on doing sports, all that they care about is work, studying and doing others things, the good health isn´t important and almost all the population are actually sedentary. For being healthy it is necesary do physical activity and eat properly. The fast food is other problem because of this a big percent of the population are fat and I think in the future this will be worst, all the people will be sedentary and the people will do less and less sports. And this is only a social problem that will affect to entire world.

For stop this it is necesary to encourage the people promoting the good health and all the benefits of the sport, like a better and longer life, less health problems, less aging , etc. Also it is necesary to do more sports activities in the community, maybe more marathons, games and campionships or open community places where doing sports don´t cost so much like in gyms. Maybe doing that kind of things we can improve the health of the people, and believe me, that will be felt inmediately in the welfare of the country.

The best in Santiago

Hello again!!! This week I will be your personal guide of good places in Santiago. Well ever turist that is visiting Santiago must visit some places. You can´t go without visit "La Moneda", this is the actual government house and it is where the actual president works. In 1973 this palace was attacked by the Army and the president, Salvador Allende died. When you go to "La Moneda" you must see the chance of commant of the Carabineros, the chilean police. Another place that you must visit is the "Cerro Santa Lucía", a hill in middle of Santiago, you have to climb to the top and from there you will be able to see all Santiago, is a beautiful view that you can`t miss. This hill was called for Pedro de Valdivia, a conqueror that founded the city of Santiago in 1541.

Another beautiful hill is the "Cerro San Cristobal", it is in middle of Santiago too, but this is much bigger that the first and much more beautiful, in my opinion. A image of the Virgin Mary is in the top of this hill and you can get to it on foot, in peak-tram or in chairlift, this is so much fun and in the way to it you can see all the parks with nature and animals from all Chile. Next to the "Cerro San Cristobal" is "La Chascona" the Pablo Neruda´s house, one of the best poet of Chile (he won the Nobel Prize in Literature), it is a beautiful house full of art and very unique and original.

Another place is "Plaza de Armas", the historical center of Santiago, in this place you can see the "Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago", the "Correo Central", the "Museo Histórico Nacional" and the "Ilustre Municipalidad de Santiago", also you can see painters and beautiful arts shows.

You can go to much places, the "Club Hipico" and see horse races, to "Templo Votivo de Maipú" and see the place where was the "Batalla de Maipu" and many other, you have to go and enjoy the experience of being in the beautiful Capital of Chile: Santiago.

Music in my life

Hello again!! This week I have to talk about the role of music in my life, Well generally I´m not the kind of person that love music but I really like it, If I have to chose I would prefer painting instead of music. Well the kind of music I like it is pop music, I don´t like rock, metal or punk because are so louder and the lyrics don´t have any sense. I like the music that talk about romance, love, dreams or just relationships because I found it beautiful and really inspired.
I get my music from television, radio or internet but when I have some money I buy the CD in "Feria del Disco", a store in Santiago that sell all kind of music you can ever imagine.
Well, I really don´t follow any group but the singers I usually heard are Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Ashley Tisdale, The Veronicas and sometimes Paramore.
When I am studying I can´t listen music because it deconcentrate me, I need absolutely any sound, sometimes my brother is listening to radio and I have to tell him that tur off it, I really hate sounds when I´m trying to learn something. Instead when I´m happy this is completely different, I go to the computer and put the music I like and can hear it over and over during hours, my parents have to take away the computer and send me to my room!!!
When I´m sad I usually don´t listen to music, all that I do is go to my room or talk with my mom, the music don´t help in that situation because I think the music is only and just an accompanyment and something to relax, but I know that for other people is a way of expression and a really support when they need it and I totally respet that.

Transantiago, before and after

Hello everyone!!! This week I have to talk about transantiago, the new transport system of santiago since 2007, Well I think that was a great idea but at the beginning it was horrible because everybody was lost and all the buses were full, you can´t go the place you want to go because it was imposible!!! But I think it was no very different with the pre- Transantiago system because the drivers don´t stop never when you want take the bus and they were so rude and bad with students and people in generally.

Well the first year of transantiago I had to take two buses for getting home and it took me two hours!! and I was to walk a lot too. I remember that the subway was full too and it was terrible try enter in it.

Now, 2 years later I think the transantiago improves everyday, now I can take the bus at the hour and go to a place in good time, but in the peak hour there are so many people that it`s very difficult try to go home, that is a problem yet. I hope it improves in the future and the people have a better transport system and don´t take us more than and hour try getting home, because after work school or university all of us are tired and want to go home quicly and easily, but for doing that the people must collaborate, behave and have a good attitude too.

A country I would like to visit

Hello everyone!!!! This week I have to write about a country I would like to visit....It´s a hard decision because there are many countries in the world and each of them have something unique and special. Well the country that I would like to visit is France because this is one of the most beautiful country in the world, including the lovely Paris. I have to go there before I die!!!

Well I want to go because the history and the famous Louvre Museum, my favourite pintor is Leonardo Da Vinci and because of that I have to see his paintings.

The Architecture in France is wonderful, specially Gothic Architecture like the Notre Dame cathedral, also there are many castles (Château) and huge palaces and of course, the most famous construction in France: The Eiffel Tower.

Another reason it is because in France the food it is excellent and I want to eat every type of chesse, bread and gormet food.

I would visit France only for vacations, entertainment and meet another culture, I would like visit different places and have a good time but I don´t want to live, work or study there, because I think it will be more difficult and I want to do that things in another countries, like Spain or England.

About France I know a lot of things, like the history and culture but for really knowing a country it is necesary to visit it and live the experience by yourself.

My first semester...

Hello everyone!!! Well this week I have to talk about the experiences of my first semester in the university. I`m studying obstetrice in the University of Chile, and this is my first year. Well I had already finished my first semester, I passed all my exams but it was very difficult because the subjects were very complicated.
When I entered the university I was a little scared because the new challenges that were waiting for me, like new subjects , my teachers, meet new people , etc. Also I was worried because I didn´t know exactly if I wanted this career, but now I´m sure that I belong here.
My family was a huge support too, they helped me when I was confused and because of that I could take the right decisions.
During the last semester I learned a lot of things, like nursery, embriology and genetics, but because all the study I didn´t have the time for do anything more.
I met a lot of people too, like my classmate and teachers and a lot of people of other carrers and I made a lot of friends too, but because the study I didn´t have the time to see my school friends, but we are still in contact.

The best thing of the last semester was knew the university and lived new experiences that I never had before. I think that I`m just beggining and I will know a lot of things more, and a lot of challenges are waiting for me. I`m very happy and excited because I`m doing my future and something that I love, I can´t wait for finish my studies and finally become in a great midwife.

My blogging experiences

Hi!!! This week I have to write the last blog of the semester. This blog is about my blogging experiences and I think it was a very good experience, but sometimes it was difficult and boring, because the blog was writing in Friday, the last day of the week when I was very tired and my strength was reduced and I couldn’t think more. I didn’t enjoy it very much, because I am bad for writing and I didn´t like it but in this experience I must to do it and I did. Writing the blogs every week with an increasing level of difficult helps me a lot for development my English and my redaction, but could be better and more interesting If each student had chose his own subject, even for only one opportunity. But write about our future profession and what we are studying now in the university was very beneficial because it allow us to learn more about we are doing.
The advantages of writing in the blog is that everyone can improve their English and learn a lot with that, also it helps you to know redaction and for expand your vocabulary, with is very important because in this time of globalization is crucial to know English in all the areas and is better to learn now that we are in the university than later when maybe we won’t have the chance to study it. The disadvantages of writing blogs in the class is that sometimes we don’t have the time to finish it, other disadvantages is that the blogs are evaluated and many times we don’t know how to write or how to express what we want to say. But in the last time I have been enjoying this activity and I miss it when it will finish.

Do schools kill creativity?? Review

Hi everybody!! This time I have to do a review about Sir Ken Robinson’s talk
Do schools kill creativity? Well, I`m totally agree with that. I advise you that read it because is very interesting and true about that is happening now in our educational system.
Sir Ken talks about the extraordinary evidence of human creativity, especially in children, the children have the extraordinary capacity of innovation and also have a huge talent. They take challenges even if they are not sure, they try, and they are not afraid. All these qualities are mentioned and I completely agree, because the minds of the children are the most creative in the entire world. But there is a problem, he said when children enter to school they lose the creative ability and that is a fact. Today the educational system is worried only in Math, History instead of teaching children subjects that help them to development their creativity like arts or music, and that is horrible, we should listen well to Sir Ken Robinson and reflect about the education and change it because if we continue to limit our children, we will be taking away the opportunity to innovate and create a better future for themselves.

My Ideal Job

Hello everybody!! This week I have to talk about of my ideal job. Well you know that I am studyimg obstretice in the univesity of chile, so I will be a midwife. My ideal job is to become a midwife and work in a public hospital, because is there where the people need us more. I want to work in obstretice, attending deliveries and help to the woman to have her baby safetly, healthly and with he best attencion. Also I want to work in neonatology because I love the babies!!! So my ideal work is one where I can work in the delivery and after take care of the newborn and the new mother.
My ideal job also inlcudes a good salary, because with a good salary I will be able to buy a house and to travel around the world, free time in the weekends and holidays in janueary. But I know that all this is a fantasy. But I will find a job that will be similar and actually in Chile this area is not so full so I think that won´t be so difficult to find it.
The skills that I would need are know everything about delivery and care in the mother and newborn, all this I am learning in the university now and in the next five years. I think that I will be good in this job because I like this and I love babies and the vocation is one of the most important things for do a good job.

My favourite subject

Hi everyone!! Now I have to talk about my favourite subject in the first semester of obstetrice . I have a lot of subjects this semester, all of them hards and difficults, but interesting, I have learnt a lot too. Well the subject that most I like is embryology, and the teacher who teaches me is Mariana Rojas.
I like this subject because is new, I never saw embryology in the school with so much details like I see now. Also is very interesting know how our lifes begin, all of us was a little group of cells and then we grow up until we look like humans. In the laboratory we can look real embryos and fetuses and see their development. Also we can see real parts of bodys in the fetus, like his heart, lungs and face and a lot of parts more. This subjects doesn´t finish yet because the semester finish on july 11, and I still studying embryology but that I learnt is know and recognize the first stages on the development of babies and how we changes during the months of pregnancy until we are ready to born and to face the new world.

My Future

Hi everybody!!! This week I have to talk about my future . This is very interesting because all of us have imagined once how will be the future.
In 5 years more I`ll hope I will finish my professional career, Obstetrice and then work as a midwife, specially in neonatology, because I love it. Pesonally I hope to be independent and live in my own house and a few years later have a family. Obiously I would like to live at a huge house with a large gard, but I think that an apartment for start is enough, but for that I have to save money at least for one year after graduation.
Also I hope to be doing my tesis and graduated with honor and start inmediately to work, I won`t have time for travel around the work or something like that, but I don`t care I will be doing what I love and helping to mothers and her babies and that is enough to me. After I will graduated I would like to continue studying for a master`s degree and learn a lot more of my career always innovatinga and improving myself.

The Best in my area

Hi!! This day I have to talk about the person that I admired in my area, that is the health and take care of the people. One of the person in my area that I really admired is my all life`s pediatrician and her name is Dr. Pamela Acuña. She had saved me a lot of times when I was a child and when she was attending me she always did it being so lovely and nice. She always Knew what to do and how I could feel better. I´m eighteen years old and because of that I can´t go anymore to the pediatrician, but the last time that I saw her she wished me luck and succes in my career and professional future, now she is attending to my litte brother Fernando and when he and my mother go to see her she always sent me greetings and more luck!!!.

Actually she still continue helping children and babys and I want to do the same in the future as a midwife. I want to work in neonatology because of that. Her vocation and good performance convinced me to study Obstretice.

My Career

Hello everybody again!!! I have to tell you about my career.

I´m studying Obstretice in the University of Chile and this is my first year. I study here because this university is the best in Chile and I chose this career because it is very exciting and beautiful help to the pregnant women to giving birth, receive a new human life and then take care of the newborn.I really love it!!!

The midwife contribute to the women`s health before, during and after the pregnancy and also in the newborn`s care , specially during the first days of life.

There are so many tools that a midwife can use for doing her profession, and all depends of the time of pregnancy, or if the women are not pregnant there are others tools for that. The tools more commonly used are the obstetrical forceps, pelvimetres, umbilical scissors ,gall duct forceps, metal catheters female,vaginal speculum, uterine depressors, uterine dilators, uterine curettes, and a lot of more instruments.

My favourite subject is neonatology, I think the little babys are gorgeous. In the future I will stay in this area, is hard to take care other person`s childrens , especially when they are newborn and the parents are so excited, it`s a big responsability but for that I`m studying so hard and I hope to be a great midwife in the future.

A special photograph

Hi everybody! Now I have to tell you about a photograph that I like, I don´t like take pictures, I usually do it only for special occasions, but a picture that I really like is one that shows me and my best friends. It is really beautiful because we were in the beach, in "Quintero". That weekend all my classmate were to the refuge of the school in quintero, we stayed all the weekend and we had a lot of fun, we went out to the beach in the day and then in the nights we stayed in the refuge and made a lot of disorder and crazy things. Because was winter we couldn`t swin in the sea, but that didn`t matter, it was enough to be together.

The photograph shows to my friends, their names are nicole, xiomara, paola, ninoska and manola. That year we were in second grade of high school, the photograph was taken in 2006, so many years ago!! I think that is incredible how the time has passed!!! The picture was taken by my mother, she went to quintero too. I like it because is a special time in my life, my friends and that cute beach, all beautiful remembers of that happy year. Today they are still my best friends and we see a lot, always remembering the past.

Career Related Website

I think my favourite career-related website is http://www.auladigital.med.uchile.cl/. This website is especially for members of the university of Chile, and also provides all the information about the classes and is the medium of communication between the professors and the students.
When I entered to the university the professors told me and everyone that this website would be important to study and have all the contents of the classes. It is very useful and it makes the work at home easier.
All the days there is new information or new homework for the nexts days, because of that I must visit it all days, every weeks and weekends.
I like this site because I can know everything I have to do. I don`t need to go to the university or call a professor for know what to do, all this is in the internet and that`s very comfortable. Also the professors used this site for give us all the contents of the classes, the power points, etc. this is very cool , because I can pay attention to the class without worrying about taking notes, and when I have the exam I enter to this site and that`s all!!!

Mi favourite piece of tecnology

My favourite piece of tecnology is the television, this is a telecommunication medium for tansmiting and and receiving pictures or images, normally accompanied by sound, where you can see pictures, movies, soups, and every kind of programs. I´ve had a television since I was a child, because of that I can´t remember when I got my first TV.

I see a lot of things (like Dr. House, movies, animal planet,MTV, etc.), but I use it to have fun and a moment of rest and relaxation after all the work and study I did during the day.

I want to use it all day, but actually I don´t have time because of my studies, but I try to see it in weekends and when I have a little of free time.

The reason to use it is because it is fun, gives you information about the world and other cultures, is easy and very comfortable too (use the remote control and that`s all!!!).

My life without the television would be very boring and I couldn´t know about what´s happening in the world, I think the television has been one of the most important pieces of tecnology in the last century, the communication without it would be very hard and difficult, for me and for everyone.

Hello!! Well My name is Bélgica Erices and I am eighteen years old, Iwas born in Santiago of Chile.



Actually I´m studying Obstretice in the University of Chile and this is my first year there, because of that I´m very tired and busy and almost never can go out whit my friends.

I liked painting, swimming, singing (but not very well) and I loved pets, I´ve four of them!! three dogs and one hamster, my dogs are called tabatha, athalie and blaky and my hamster is called remy.


Now I`m living with my parents and my little brother Fernando, we fight a lot but we love each other anyway. All my family give me support and strength in all I ever wanted, because of that I can study for be a profesional.


In the last year I studied in Liceo 1 Javiera Carrera, a emblematic high school in Chile, I had a lot of friends there, but now all are studying in differents careers and we can`t see very much. I miss my friends but I`m trying to don`t loose the contact with them, so when I have time I try to speak with them for phone or using messenger.

In the future, I hope finish my career and then have a family, but the only thing that I have in mind right now it`s study and keep getting better.
